Precision livestock farming: a qualitative exploration of swine industry stakeholders

Introduction Precision livestock farming (PLF) technology development has proliferated recently, but on-farm adoption lagged. Understanding PLF stakeholders’ views, practical applications, limitations, and concerns are necessary to understand the factors influencing of technology. Methods Using semi-structured online interviews, 12 influential views lived experiences were investigated. A phenomenological paradigm was used generate qualitative data that analyzed using template analysis. Results We identified two unique groups stakeholders, namely enthusiast cautious groups. The majority participants well aware had firsthand experience with technologies currently being in swine industry. Discussion found perceived improve specificity decision-making, better care for pigs, animal health welfare, increase labor efficiency, resource-use efficiency. Poor internet connectivity inability use decision-making due needing first complete daily tasks considered key obstacles its implementation. To integrate into existing barn environment, it is modify farm buildings infrastructure management protocols. Stakeholders’ main included privacy issues influence on human-animal relationships farmers’ duty animals. In conclusion, stakeholders camera systems monitoring pig welfare ensuring individual identification as a high priority going forward.
